Let’s just say you read my first journey, “The Lonely Road to Destiny”, you will know how we have come to this place now. Consequentially, it should then be of no surprise where the road began and quite possibly, where I may be heading. I’ve traveled a tough road of challenging turns and learned that wherever it is that I might be heading, a lonely road lay before me. No matter what the case might be, I, like you perhaps, must travel this road through life alone living and dying by the decisions that we make day to day.
Some of us will find that companion that completes us and some will not. I, don’t believe in that particular coupling for myself and so my life shall go. Alas, the pain of life itself and those that surround you, consume you, or draw the goodness from you, evolves. The travels of life take you upon journeys. Some of us know not from where we begin, where we are, or where it is that we are to go. For me, my book, “The lonely Road to Destiny” ended August, 2002. I now pick up where we left off. Our last journey was that of an unfolding story. This one shall be different. This time we shall share in ideologies. This time I shall share the lessons and not so much the unfolding story.
The pain that comes from traveling the path is different for everyone. If we look through an open eye, we see the purpose that dominates our destiny. I discovered that purpose along the traveled path, circa March 2005. I came to the conclusion why we all do what we do. We do it for love. It dominates our life. We are either looking for it, in it, out of it, hurting from it, hiding from it, or wishing it was more a part of our life. We all feel this way. All of these other things around us are furnishings, furnishings that provide comforts, luxury, and what we perceive to be “happiness” and “success”. In this pursuit for this thing called, “love”, we sacrifice many different things. Sometimes it is our character. Other times it is the values that we hold so dear to us (if in fact we have such a virtue). Still others is our comfort zone that protects us from being hurt from the last encounter, whether we were careless with our heart or someone else was. These matters of the heart are delicate ones. They are to be handled with ‘kit gloves’. The heart is the weak link in a chain of reason and logic. The heart serves no real purpose in our lives short of tempting us with the fruits of what we think or perceive to be the attainment of ‘happiness’. This very desire, the very hunger to attain the ownership of this most prized possession called love, drives us to do the unimaginable. Reprehensible things. At times, it drives us to compromise our beliefs in God, our belief in doing what is believed to be ‘right and wrong’, it drives us to become so insane and miscalculated in our deduction and evaluation of reason and sensibility. But then again, when was love ever a sensible thing?
I decided that my path is not the answer to life but more of a message. In my own strange way of reasoning, it is why I was put here. It is why I will die. Perhaps, it will be what I die from. Who can tell? But, the last 2 years of my life has served me to evolve: To evolve into a messenger and a kind of a ‘prophet’. Love warps the mind, the body, and the soul.) It is why great kingdoms have fallen, great men have dropped to their knees, or people of government have gone into disarray. Behind every scandal, behind every action that has driven a man to do maddening things, there is a temptress somewhere pulling the strings. Now this fault and the blame sits directly an squarely upon the shoulders of no one else but us….the men! It shows how weak minded we really are and how easily we can be swayed when under the smell of lust, love, or whatever you would like to call it!
Now relax, I don’t hate women. HOWEVER, men have gotten the bad rap and the name for years. And behind a cloak of secrecy and deceit, women have played the same game. NOT ALL WOMEN!!! But look around you. These days, most have succumbed to the world in which we now live. A world driven by the lust and desire to gather material things, items, and worldly possessions, all of which have no place or purpose in the pursuit of spiritual enlightenment. I see it in my home town all the time. Married women driving around in their husband’s gas guzzling hummers, sipping mocha latte’s and crappuccinos, pushing strollers, buying excessively, and bringing home the receipts to the idiot coming home providing all these ridiculous luxuries. WHY? Are these women really happy? Are these men concluding that they are ‘providing’ for their women? Who the hell knows!
Perhaps the reason, above all, that my words reflect an heir of frustration, anger, or bitterness is because of the wrong done to me by the women in my life………..OBVIOUSLY! Why the anger? Why the frustration you ask? Well, it is quite simple yet obnoxiously complex at the same time: The perfect marriage of provable conclusion and illogical paradox. Where logic fails to prove, ‘love’ comes to rear its ugly head, defying all that is logical, reasonable, mathematically sound, or sensibly thought out. Love defies every equation of perfect synergy, irrefutable accuracy, and unimaginable reality. It crosses boundaries of the thinking man’s mind and makes us do dumb things without fear of cause or consequence, right or wrong, logical or illegitimate.
And how do you ask, does this all take place? How does this perfect little game, this infinite circle of madness begin? It begins with that single twinkle. That little butterfly that begins to fly around in the darkest corner of the stomach that tells our pee-wee brains that this might be a ‘good idea’. Or maybe, it’s that son-of-a-bitch of a penis that convinces us that we MUST meet this person. Of course, we all know that once you dump the "jerk-off juice" out of the system, logic and reasoning returns. God’s cruel joke on us men!
Nearly 2 years ago, I stepped off the path of the lonely road, detouring for what I thought was a pathway to a different ending. But unfortunately and not inconsistent with my expectations, as I’ve known all along, for me the path (my path) is so evident and clear. My path to destiny is a lonely one. Not one that I’ve asked for or have brought about on my own through self prophecy, but one that has been assigned to me by a force in this universe above and beyond a sense of reasoning or understanding. Don’t ask why, I don’t know! It is just one of those things we are born with. One of those things that we know and we know not why! It is one of the those inconceivable truths that we cannot hide from. For me, it is the sun rising in the east and setting in the west. It is as non bending as the North Star being in the, well, north. It is what I was born to know and just is. And some things that are will just be.
As we ask those universal questions, “Why me” or “What did I do to deserve this”, the forces of nature continue to guide us to and through the outcomes and take us places that we need to go, whether or not we understand why.
My latest travels down the path of life caused me to encounter unique lessons that will undoubtedly stay with me for all my life, adding more mystery to that universal question of, “Why”?
Now, don’t get me wrong. I like nice things, aspire to gather ‘items’ of value and importance, but NOT at the cost of my character, my integrity, my honor, or my name! I never compromised my beliefs in who I am, what I was put here to do, or put my professional or financial interests above that of the people that seek my help in my expertise area of sciences. And now, through my travels of business, love, and the learned path that I have traveled these past 31 years, I share this wisdom so that together we may learn. (And you didn’t think a 31 year-old-man knew anything!! Shame on you!)

On April 14th of 1945, I was five years old. I came in from playing and was met by my mother who was sobbing. "Your other mother is dead," she said. I felt very sad, but for my adoptive mother. I never knew who my birth-mother was and never even considered the fact that I had another mother somewhere. I later found out that all the records associated with my adoption were supposed to have been sealed. So how could Mom have known that?
I had a little bit of information about my birth. One such fact was that I suffered from hypopladia, "a condition I inherited from my father." It turns out that means that the opening of my penis was at the bottom rather than at the end. Of all the things to inherit! I also knew that I was born at General Hospital in Minneapolis, and that Mom and Dad were listed as the parents.
That was all I knew for more than forty years. Mom died in 1985 and Dad in 1987. I was named executor of his estate. When I went through the papers I found a baptismal record for Richard Allen Hemmingsen, born on my birthday! Three names were listed as witnesses. After fighting with myself for a week I looked one name up in the phone book and called. A woman answered and I asked if Lloyd was there. The woman said he wasn't, but she would have him call me. I never heard from him and in the meantime, my ardor to find my birth family had subsided.
Evie's father died a day after my mother on Christmas Day in 1985. When her mother died in 1987 she decided that she wanted to find out about her birth mother. She didn't have any feelings of betrayal. Nor did I. The laws that sealed the records in the early 1940s had been changed, and it was now possible to contact birth relatives, if both parties agreed to the contact. She wrote a long letter explaining all the things that had happened to her in her life and her views about politics and religion. To her delight, she got a response! Her mother was now living in Michigan and wanted to meet her. They did at the Minneapolis airport. An aunt was with her. In a long conversation, Evie learned that she had two half-sisters, a half-brother, and several aunts and uncles who were all very anxious to meet her. One aunt looked exactly like her. Her siblings were thrilled, and so was the man her birth-mother had married. He was a retired minister and had known about Evie for as long as they were married. We have had a warm relationship with the whole family for nearly twenty years. Unfortunately it has been shrinking because of deaths, but Evie still meets with a favorite aunt at least once a month. Her experiences finding her birth-family became a feature article in the Minneapolis Sunday paper.
My path was a bit different. After Evie connected with her family, I again decided to try to find mine. Lloyd was still unavailable, but there were two other names on the baptismal certificate. I found one of the names in the Minnneapolis phone book. When I called him, he said, "You must be one of Hilma's twins."
I told him that I was born in 1940. No, my uncle said. "The twins were born in 1944."
You can imagine how excited I was to hear that! He said that she had died of internal bleeding one day after giving birth to twin boys. Ironically, my half-sibs were born on the same day as my adoptive sister, but a year later. I found out where Hilma was living when the twins were born and immediately placed a personals ad in the local newspaper asking whether anyone had information about the whereabouts of twin boys born in April of 1944.
No one responded.
In the meantime my new uncle arranged for me to meet with the rest of the family. It was huge; Hilma had had 10 siblings. An aunt threw a potluck lunch and the thirty some relatives all showed up. One was the other signer of the baptismal certificate. I asked her about my twin brothers. "They aren't brothers," she said. "They were a boy and a girl. Everyone called them Jack and Jill."
From that point, everything came together. We were able to locate the adoption agency and they located the adoptive mother. She said that both children were alive and well. Later that night I got a call from my brother, and a few days later, my sister. Bro looks like me, but a bit heavier. We met my sister in Montana and visited Yellowstone Park together. We were both delighted. I have kept in contact with my Minnesota family. I have yet to visit my brother but I get regular letters from my sister.
One of my aunts gave me a photo album of my mother. One, showing her on a bicycle with a friend, looked so much like me that we showed it to one of Evie's buddies. "That's John in a dress," Evie said, smiling. "Oh," said our friend. "Who's that with him?"
My last words are advice for others who may be in our situation. Things don't always work out as well as they did for Evie and me, but if they do, it's like stepping into a different world, the alternative universe you always wondered about.

I had the privilege of listening to a very interesting lecture at a holistic event about something I never really thought about, the practice of circumcision on male babies in the U.S. I learned that doctors do this on a routine basis, charging anywhere between $150 and $300 per male baby to not only remove a large part of his penis, but do it in an inhumane way. The doctors generally reassure parents that this is the way to go, for cleanliness or the prevention of disease.
Now, I don’t believe a mistake was made when man was created, do you? Even if one doesn't believe in creation, nature just doesn't repeatedly make what doctors are considering to be faults in baby boys that must be fixed. I understand that those of the Jewish faith regularly circumcise the male child but according to what I have learned, they only remove a very small portion of the foreskin at the tip of the glans. Doctors in the U.S. remove the whole thing which is a lot of skin and amounts to approximately the size of a 3 x 5 inch index card in an adult male! Many times they accidentally remove even more skin than this and boys grow up with either painful erections or their erections are bent because the skin is stretched too tight. Both men and women usually believe that's just the way some penises look and never question it. There can be other complications also. Circumcised males grow up never knowing that they lost a natural function of the penis and lost a great amount of sexual pleasure.

I heard and read about how the babies are circumcised in this country. Their arms and legs are strapped down to a restraint board and during the procedure, they scream in pain and terror. This makes my heart go out to all male babies in this country and elsewhere where this is practiced. I learned that only until recently in the U.S. did doctors begin using some kind of anesthetic for the baby but this is not a common practice.
What a way to come into the world! So I wonder, what affect does this practice have on males about themselves and their self-worth? How has this traumatic experience manifested in the male's life while growing up and as a man? And why is this still being practiced in America?
Fortunately, there is light at the end of the tunnel. The lecturer gave me a book written by Thomas J. Ritter, M.D. and George C. Denniston, M.D. called, “Doctors Re-examine Circumcision”. It seems that many physicians around the U.S. are now speaking out against circumcision.
"The United States is the only country in the entire world that routinely circumcises most of its newborn males for other than religious reasons.” [p. 16-1]
It contains pictures and diagrams of circumcision procedures, including pictures of mistakes with the procedure, resulting in a deformed penis or no penis at all. In the event of an accidental, complete amputation of the penis, which apparently happens, the doctor would just create a vagina. The book also has pictures of what a penis is really supposed to look like and all of the benefits an natural, uncircumcised penis has. It examines the many myths people have been told over the years of why circumcision is "necessary".
“What moral or legal right does any parent have to remove a valuable and normal segment of another human being’s body?” Would it be moral or legal to remove the tip of every male’s left little finger, or to knock out a front tooth, because it was fashionable and everyone else was doing it?” [p. 13-1]
The good news is that there is a movement of circumcised men around the country to grow their foreskins back! A man is actually able to regain a large amount of sensitivity after growing back what was taken from in the first place, without his consent. Our bodies are truly miraculous!
