Definition: Benign prostatic hypertrophy is swelling of Prostate gland. The prostate is a walnut sized gland that is only present in men. It is located just below the bladder and top of the penis. This gland surrounds the urethra (the tube through which urine flows from the bladder and out through the penis). It is a very astonishing fact to know that the condition BPH has been explained in ayurveda long back. The anatomical position of prostate gland, symptoms of BPH and its remedies are explained by Acharya Sushruta. The anatomical position of prostate gland is described in ayurvedic classics as follows... In Yogaratnakara it has been described as -- “ NAABHERADHASTHAATSANJAATAHA SANCHAARI YADI VAACHALAHA | ASHTEELAAVAD GHANO GRANTHIROODHWAR MAAYATA UNNATAHA || “ Which means “ Below umbilicus (NAABHI), there is a hard gland which is little bit bulged and changes its place some times and some times stays stationary. This gland is like “Ashteela” (A small stone used to sharpen swords). This gland when affected by vitiated vata causes a disease called “vataashteela” (or benign prostate hypertrophy) Sushruta explains the structure, anatomical position of prostate gland and symptoms of BPH as follows. “SHACRANMAARGASYA BASTHESHCHA VAAYURANTARAMAASHRITAHAI ASHTEELAAVADGHANAM GRANTHIMMOORDHVAMAAYATA MUNNATAM|| “ Which means - the place between rectum and bladder is occupied by vitiated vata it affects the easy flow of urine, stools and semen by enlarging the gland “ Ashteela”. The prostate gland enlarges in all men as age advances. BPH is very common and affects one third of men who are over 50. A person suffering from BPH does not have the increased risk of prostate cancer. Functions of Prostate gland. One of the main functions of the prostate is to produce a fluid, which contribute to the liquid portion of semen and this liquid allows the sperm to move freely. The gland is divided into peripheral, transitional and central zone. The overgrowth takes place in central zone which leads to BPH. Effects of BPH Prostate gland surrounds urethra. When prostate gland enlarges, it constricts the urethra reducing the urine flow. The emptying of bladder becomes very difficult because of this. Causes of BPH According to present medical concepts the actual cause of prostate enlargement is unknown. But the causes of BPH are very well explained In ayurveda which is based on tridosha theory. The causes of vataashteela or BPH are explained as follows. Causes for vataashteela according to dosha theory: vataashteela is caused by vitiated vayu and apaana vayu ( a subcategory of Vayu) (APAANA VAYU is located in two testicles, urinary bladder, phallus, umbilicus, thighs, groins, anus and colon. Functions of apana vaayu are Ejaculation of semen, voiding of urine, stools, elimination of menstrual blood and expulsion of fetus.) The vitiation of vayu and apaana vayu is caused by 1. Controlling the urge of urinatio 2. Controlling the urge of defecation 3. Over indulgence in sex 4. Consuming dry, very cold and less quantity of food 5. Old age 6. General weakness 7. Indigestion 8. Physical and mental overexertion Symptoms of BPH • Difficulty in starting to pass urine ( hesitancy ), • A weak stream of urine, • Dribbling after urinating • The need to strain to pass urine, • Incomplete emptying of bladder. • Difficulty to control the urination urge. • Having to get up several times in the night to pass urine, • Feeling a burning sensation when passing urine. • Passing urine mixed with blood (indication of infection) Symptoms of vatashteela are described as follows. “VINMUTRAANILA SANGASCHA TANNAADMAANAMCHA JAAYATE| VEDANAA CHA PARAA BASTOU VAATAASHTEELETI TAAM VIDUHU ||“ The vitiated ashteela gland when enlarged is called as “vatashteela”. This enlarged gland causes 1. Obstruction to easy flow of urine. 2. Obstruction to Easy passage of stools and gas 3. Bloating of Stomach. 4. Pain in bladder. When the above mentioned symptoms are noticed then one should seek proper medical advice. Diagnosis A digital rectal examination will be performed to examine the size of prostate by inserting a finger into the rectum. A distended bladder can be felt per abdomen. Ultra sound examination will be done to determine the amount of urine left in the bladder after urination. Routine urine test will be done to rule out infections. A prostate gland tissue may be collected using a needle to check for cancerous cells. Ayurveda tips for SELF-CARE If symptoms are mild, the following methods can be tried for relief: 1. Vata gets vitiated when natural urges are controlled. Hence do not control the natural urge of passing urine. Urinate when you first get the urge. 2. Go to the bathroom even if you do not have urge. 3. Alcohol, tobacco, coffee increase vata and vitiate it. Hence avoid alcohol, tobacco and coffee, especially after dinner. 4. Vata gets normalized and vitiation comes down when body is warm. This can be accomplished with regular exercises and keeping the body warm. 5. Mental exertion leads to increase of vata. Avoid mental exertion at work place and at home. 6. Avoid foods which cause constipation as constipation causes vitiation of vata. Other general tips 1. Avoid drinking fluids from two hours before going to bed. 2. Avoid cold and cough medications that contain decongestants or antihistamines. These medications can increase BPH symptoms. 3. Avoid drinking excess amount of liquids. Distribute the intake of fluids throughout day. Prevention BPH can be prevented by - 1. Consuming low fat diet 2. Including lots of fiber in diet ( fruits and vegetables which are rich in fiber). 3. Visiting your family physician as soon as you notice any symptoms while passing urine. Apart from these many effective herbal remedies have been mentioned in Sushruta samhita and Yogaratnakara. vimax penis pills home pennis enlargement com enlagement penis penis pump penis enlargment result penis enlargment forum pennis enlargement surgery picture penis enhancement surgery best penile enlargement surgery
Believe it or not, there is a natural ingredient from Europe that can help change the way your legs feel and the way you feel about the circulation in your legs. Whether we realize it or not, the circulation in our legs can have a huge influence on how we feel and what we do everyday and perhaps even more so every evening. The comfort level of our legs, or better said, their discomfort level at the end of the day can adversely affect our social life and fitness activities - not to mention adversely affecting our sleep. If our legs felt better perhaps we would find it easier to do the things we'd love to do, but find it so difficult to muster the motivation. As if the way our legs can feel at the end of day isn't challenging enough, the changes in the circulation in our legs as we age can seem even more hopeless and discouraging. Now add to that the seeming conspiracy among fashion designers to have us exposing even larger portions of our aging legs and we have a problem that over 80 million Americans with varicose veins understand all too well. (1). Unfortunately, about half of all American women will develop varicose or spider veins at some point in their lives (2). Not only are they unsightly, these leg problems can also cause significant discomfort. Typically, varicose veins are characterized by bulging, blue, sometimes painful and inflamed veins that appear primarily in the calves and thighs. Spider veins, on the other hand, show up as a web of fine lines that can make your legs look like a road map. While age and heredity play a role in the development of varicose and spider veins, weight gain, pregnancy, menopause and the use of hormone replacement therapy can also trigger these vein problems. Making matters worse, chronic inactivity, standing for long periods of time or habitually crossing your legs can make you more prone to injured veins (2). Conventional treatments include surgical stripping, injecting the veins with a chemical irritant or zapping them with lasers. While these approaches can remove existing varicose or spider veins, they will not prevent new ones from developing, since these high-tech treatments do not address the underlying problem of poor circulation. Worse yet, these procedures can also cause infection, scarring, nerve damage and pain (26). If these radical treatments are not an option for you, you'll be happy to hear that there is a natural approach that not only improves the appearance of these ropy, bulging veins, it also fosters leg health to prevent future problems. Veins Explained To understand how varicose veins develop, you need to know a little bit about how blood moves through the body. Essentially, there are two types of major circulatory vessels in the body: the arteries, which channel blood from the heart to the extremities, and the veins, which bring blood from the extremities back to the heart. Of all the veins in your body, leg veins work the hardest to carry blood back to the heart. To accomplish this difficult task, your legs are equipped with specially designed one-way valves that keep the blood moving in the right direction. As efficiently as these valves work, your legs still fight a constant battle against the natural pull of gravity. If the veins can't move the blood efficiently or the one-way valves that prevent the blood from backwashing fail to close properly, blood collects in the legs. This pooling of blood then stretches the vein, causing swelling and injury to the vein's walls (3). Depending on the extent of the enlargement, these veins can show up as either spider or varicose veins. Spider veins are broken capillaries and small veins that appear as jagged red, blue or purple lines on the surface of the skin. While they aren't painful, they can be extremely unattractive. Varicose veins, on the other hand, are thick veins that run deeper beneath the skin. They are far larger and much less attractive than spider veins - and they can make your legs feel fatigued, heavy, achy or even itchy. Varicose veins can also cause burning, throbbing, cramping and restlessness. While these conditions aren't usually dangerous, severe cases can lead to chronic venous insufficiency - a persistent inability of the leg veins to adequately return blood back to the heart (4). Varicose veins are also associated with the development of skin ulcers or a chronic inflammation of a vein - a condition known as phlebitis. Phlebitis is often accompanied by formation of a blood clot, a dangerous situation since the clot can move from the leg vein and travel to the lungs (2). Get a Leg Up with Diosmin Your strategy for battling vein problems naturally is twofold: improving circulation and strengthening the vein walls. The first and simplest measure to improve blood flow is to counteract gravity. Standing or sitting all day makes it harder for blood to move up from the legs and back to the heart. But taking a few minutes to rest with your legs higher than your heart each day allows gravity to help return blood to the heart. Getting in shape can also help relieve varicose and spider veins - and it can even prevent new ones from forming. As we age we lose muscle tone, which adversely affects the health of our legs. Yet adopting a consistent exercise program promotes good circulation and can help to keep our leg muscles, and the blood vessels in our legs, toned. Walking, weight training, low-impact aerobics and swimming strengthen the legs and circulatory system, and help to reduce the throbbing and aching often associated with varicose veins. What you eat can also ease unsightly veins. A low-fat diet filled with fruits, vegetables, beans, legumes and whole grains add key nutrients and fiber to your diet. Eating a fiber-rich diet reduces the chances of constipation which can contribute to varicose veins. Constipation restricts the blood as it returns to the torso through the deep veins in the legs. Straining to have a bowel movement closes off the deep veins in the legs and restricts the flow of blood as it returns to the torso. As the blood backs up, it takes another course through superficial veins, thus the blue streaks in the legs. Eating a fiber-rich diet alleviates and prevents constipation, helping to avoid the damage to the vascular system that can result. In addition to fiber, a diet high in fruits and vegetables also ensures adequate intake of nutrients and phytonutrients, which also help tonify the blood vessels. As a bonus, a healthy diet and exercise program can also jump-start weight loss - an important consideration since carrying too much weight creates extra pressure on your heart and blood vessels, interfering with healthy circulation (2). To strengthen the veins themselves, take a tip from the Europeans. From Austria to France to Italy, women and their doctors have relied on Diosmin for more than 30 years to treat circulatory problems affecting the legs - and with good reason. Diosmin is a unique bioflavonoid derived from citrus fruits and is closely related to other citrus bioflavonoids such as hesperiden, quercetin, and rutin (5). Clinical trials have shown that Diosmin is highly effective in boosting circulation and strengthening the veins in the legs (5). Not only does this improve existing varicose and spider veins, it can also reduce the likelihood of future problems. What makes Diosmin so amazing is its power to specifically target the blood vessels in the legs. Diosmin improves both blood vessel elasticity and microcirculation while relieving pain and inflammation by inhibiting pro-inflammatory prostaglandins and thromboxanes (21,24). Because of its direct action on the integrity of vein walls, Diosmin also reduces the amount of fluid that leaks out of them (21,22). Diosmin's protective benefits do not stop there. Because it is a potent anti-oxidant, Diosmin decreases lipid peroxidation and reduces free radical damage that can undermine vein health (23, 27). In one clinical trial, people who suffered from pain and swelling due to varicose veins experienced significant improvement in their symptoms after taking Diosmin for a few months (6). A review of studies also found that, among more than 5,000 patients with vein disorders, the vast majority not only saw a reduction in their discomfort, they actually saw the swelling in their calves and ankles disappear (7). Across the board, research shows that a daily dose of 500 to 1,000 mg of Diosmin improves the health of leg veins and brings tremendous relief from pain, night cramps and leg heaviness (8,9,10,11). Both short- and long-term use of this highly effective natural ingredient comes without any side effects. It is also so safe that you need not worry about adverse interactions of Diosmin with drugs, foods, lab tests or interactions with diseases or conditions. (5). Help for Hemorrhoids Because Diosmin reduces swelling and bolsters vein health, it can also help people suffering with hemorrhoids - those uncomfortable varicose veins that form in the lower rectum and anus. Along with making it painful to sit, hemorrhoids can itch, bleed or protrude - and almost half of all Americans suffer from them by the time they turn 50 (12). Extensive research conclusively shows that Diosmin can safely alleviate the pain, inflammation and bleeding of hemorrhoids (13,14,15). Best of all, it offers quick relief, often working its magic within a week or two (16). Plus, Diosmin reduces the risk of a relapse (17). Diosmin for Cancer? While no one questions Diosmin's efficacy for treating varicose and spider veins or hemorrhoids, scientists have begun exploring other ways this potent flavonoid may boost health. Their main focus - cancer prevention - especially oral and skin cancers. Researchers haven't conclusively identified the cancer-fighting component in Diosmin, but preliminary experiments show that this flavonoid inhibits the proliferation of cancer cells (18). In two studies pitting Diosmin against other flavonoids like rutin, grapeseed extract and red wine, Spanish investigators found that Diosmin was considerably more effective at reducing the number of metastatic melanoma cells (a potentially deadly type of skin cancer cells that spread through the body) than any of the other flavonoids tested (19,20). Other studies have found that Diosmin puts the brakes on the spread of cancer cells in the mouth (25). Although it could be years before science conclusively proves Diosmin's cancer benefit, this nutrient can't be beat for supporting vein health. Along with taking supplemental Diosmin, there are several simple strategies you can employ to encourage healthy circulation. Eating a high-fiber, anti-oxidant rich diet and getting plenty of exercise can help keep veins in top form. And remember to take a break and put your feet up every now and again. References: 1. Coffee Shops are the place to chat and talk and recently a common place for Christians to meet too. Recently I got interested in a chat between two people one who went by the nick-name Knuckle and the others name was Debbie. Debbie was a Christian, sincere and sweet and Knuckle was apparently an atheist. When Knuckle told Debbie there was no god, she flipped out and went into a tirade about Knuckle being basically and idiot, scoundrel and generally lacking cranial capacity; that is to say intelligence. Debbie agreed about DNA and Knuckle thought he was winning the argument when Debbie called him a horses ass and unintelligent. So I interjected to say that DNA shows that intelligence seems to be 50/50% nature vs. nurture and so God if he is intelligent and designed us in his image, then he must be a fat overweight American. No, just kidding. Now then, assuming for a minute a little Sci Fi Fantasy that god exists, then God would only account for 50% of Knuckles intelligence, thus it appears that it really makes not a lot of difference as long as your god of intelligent design gave him some, he would get the rest afterwards. Now then if Intelligent Design is not the case then God is dumb, that is to say unintelligent. Meaning if you Debbie are made in his image minus a penis and that extra rib thing, then actually god did not give you or knuckle any brains so then where did you get them? Well, evolution has adapted homo sapiens to have larger brains than our next nearest cousins which we split off from about 1 million years ago as we are 99% DNA similar you see? So as far as calling Knuckle unintelligent because god gave him few brains, well scientifically that makes no sense. And if a god was going around giving humans inferior brains why on earth would you wish to follow such a loose cannon who would pick and choose who gets what? I just laughed and walked out figuring maybe they would all just shut up and stop fighting over this thing. Don’t let Diabetes bring your Sex Life to a Halt! In answer to the repeated question of erectile dysfunction, (the medical term for impotence), it has taken me 12 years to research, develop and trial a special herbal formula - as I made it my mission to help, believing as I do there is no reason why diabetes should bring a couple’s sex life to a halt! I’m going to tell you more about my work shortly. But before I do so, I thought it might prove useful to look at Diabetes generally.’ In the United States around 5% of the population has Diabetes. In cases of Diabetes Mellitus this results from a defect in the production of insulin by the pancreas. There are two types of diabetes which are now recognized: the juvenile (Type I), seen in children and young adults, and the maturity–onset type, (Type II), seen usually in obese individuals over forty. For the purpose of this report I am concentrating on the maturity-onset type where often due to prolonged obesity, there occurs a reduction in insulin receptors in target cells (i.e., a down-regulation of the receptors), due to high and steady insulin production. Each of us has a specific number of fat cells which is fixed in infancy. As we gain weight, these cells become enlarged and the number of glucose receptor sites decreases so that ever less glucose can be received and used by the cells. Without sufficient insulin to carry it into the cells where it can be used for energy, or without available receptor sites, glucose accumulates in the blood until some of the surplus is eliminated by the kidneys and passed off in the urine. So typically when the ingestion of an over abundance of insulin inducing foods such as refined carbohydrates and convenience ‘junk’ food) occurs the pancreas can no longer produce enough insulin to restore optimal blood glucose levels. In this condition, the available insulin is ineffective, resulting in signs similar to complete insulin deficiency, hyperglycemia, (high blood sugar levels), glycosuria, (extra glucose spills over in urine), polydipsia, (great thirst leading to increased water intake), and weight loss. How do you know you have Type II Diabetes? Easy fatigue – because the body is not getting enough fuel. Drowsiness, itching, blurred vision, excessive weight, tingling or numbness in the extremities, skin infections and slow healing of cuts and scratches especially on the feet. Because of the accumulation of sugar in the blood, the kidneys are hard-pressed to get rid of it, so you will probably be excessively thirsty and passing more urine than usual. Another prominent suspicious sign is an unexplained loss of sexual desire. Always seek advise from your medical advisor who can arrange the appropriate tests. What can I do about this condition? If you are a diabetic you are probably well aware of the effects of high glycemic foods and the need to maintain blood sugar surges. So what follows are a number of additional key recommendations: •Eat a high-complex-carbohydrate, low-fat, high fiber diet including plenty of raw fruits and vegetables as well as fresh fruit juices. This Reduces the need for insulin and also lowers the level of fats in the blood. Fiber helps to reduce blood sugar surges. For snacks, eat oat or rice bran crackers with nut butter or cheese. Legumes, root vegetables, and whole grains are also good. •Avoid saturated fats and simple sugars (except when necessary to balance an insulin reaction). •Get your protein from vegetable sources, such as grains and legumes. Fish and low-fat dairy products are also acceptable sources of protein. •Supplement your diet with spirulina. Spirulina helps to stabilize blood sugar levels. Other foods that help normalize blood sugar include berries, brewer’s yeast, dairy products (especially cheese), egg yolks, fish, garlic, kelp, sauerkraut, soybeans, and vegetables. •Do not take fish oil capsules or supplements containing large amounts of para-aminobenzoic acid (PABA), and avoid salt and white flour products. Consumption of these products results in an elevation of blood sugar. •Do not take supplements containing the amino acid cysteine. It has the ability to break down the bonds of the hormone insulin and interferes with absorption of insulin by the cells. •Avoid taking large amounts of vitamin B3 (Niacin). However, small amounts (50 to 100 milligrams daily), taken as a supplement may be beneficial. Circulatory effects of Diabetes – How does that effect me? For reasons not completely understood, Type II diabetes if untreated, can lead to vascular diseases that among other things, causes blindness, atherosclerosis, heart attacks, kidney disease, and gangrene. What we do know for certain is that in excess, insulin has the power to make arteries less elastic. It also acts as a growth hormone on smooth muscle cells in the walls of the arteries, causing them to increase in thickness, become stiffer and less supple, while at the same time decreasing the volume within the arteries. Let’s look closer at effects that cause erectile dysfunction…… The subject of impotence usually remains behind closed doors, however, some physicians speculate that as many as 70 percent of diabetic men are impotent. In obese men this is related to an over abundance of oestrogen (a female hormone), which in turn desensitises the skeletal muscles to the action of insulin. Diabetes can damage the nerves, (neuropathy), the erectile tissue and small blood vessels in the penis. Neuropathy may mean there is less sensation in the penis and less signalling to it from the brain, making it more difficult to get and maintain an erection. Damage to the blood vessels will also prevent erectile tissue from filling with blood. This is why diabetes and erectile dysfunction are closely linked. What other factors play a part in erectile dysfunction? It may be that medications taken for diabetes, high blood pressure or for other conditions can be the cause. Drinking too much and smoking can also cause the problem. Psychological and emotional factors such as anxiety depression and stress are also important. What you can do to overcome erectile dysfunction Talk to your doctor. Because erectile dysfunction is a common diabetes-related problem, your doctor won’t be surprised when you mention the topic. The doctor can check if there are significant problems with the arteries or the nervous system as occasionally these aspects might need special attention in their own right. Control your blood sugar. If blood glucose levels are kept in the normal range, it will help reduce the chance of this problem occurring. Avoid tobacco. If you smoke-STOP! Smoking can cause blood vessels to narrow, contributing to blockages that can lead to erectile dysfunction. Smoking can also decrease nitric oxide levels, (which controls the circulation of blood, and transmits messages between nerve cells. As a result deficiency includes the inability to achieve and sustain normal erections). Avoid excessive alcohol. As a rule of thumb men should restrict their intake to no more than two alcoholic drinks a day. Drinking excessive amounts of alcohol can cause erectile dysfunction by damaging blood vessels. Maintaining normal blood pressure is important. In addition to smoking, and drinking excess alcohol please note that diabetics who control their condition reduce the risk of hypertension. I have 12 more strategies: Watch your weight: In over weight people, a 10 percent reduction in total body weight will sometimes normalize blood pressure. Compute your Body Mass Index: Multiply your weight in pounds by 703; then divide by your height in inches; then again divide by your height in inches. Try to stay between 18.5 and 24.9. Regular exercise minimizes the chance of developing impotence and can restore sexual function in some men. In general, if you haven’t been exercising, try to work up to 30 minutes, 4 to 6 times a week. Please bear in mind the importance of eating more carbohydrates before exercise. Exercise produces an insulin-like effect in the body. Your doctor may make a different recommendation based on your health. If you can’t carry on a conversation while you exercise, you may be overdoing it. So in this case it is best to alternate exercise days with rest days to prevent injuries. Suggested dose with bioflavonoids such as Bilberry 3,000-6,000 mg daily, in divided doses. Vitamin E: Evidence suggests that vitamin E also magnifies vitamin C’s blood pressure-lowering effects. Start with 100 IU daily and add 100 IU daily each month, until you reach 400 IU daily. As much as possible avoid stress: Always ensure some “Me Time”, a great way to achieve this is putting 5 drops each of lemon balm and lavender essential oils in warm bath water. They can help assess your condition, determine its cause, and identify safe and effective treatments. Fortunately the treatment of erectile dysfunction in diabetes has improved considerably over the last decade. In addition to a number of devices, some men with diabetes can get relief for their sexual problems from medications such as sildenafil (Viagra), tadalafil (Cialis), or vardenafil (Levitra). However, I have collected data, that many people who were utilising Viagra, Cialis, and Levitra reported that sometimes these drugs do not work at all. I believe that when your system is low in testosterone, (the male hormone), Viagra, Cialis, and Levitra do not seem to impart their full-proof effect. I have discovered two herbs that mimic the action of Viagra together with two traditional herbal testosterone boosters. I then completed the formula with additional herbs to increase circulation and act as an aphrodisiac. Properties of Herbs Responsible for assisting ED from my research and formulation. Crimes committed by women differ from criminality done by men by the nature of a crime, and its’ consequences, as well as by methods, crime weapon, and choice of victim. It is hard to object that crimes committed by women have more emotional characteristic then those committed by men. Women are far less likely than men to commit crime and this pattern seems to hold true all over the world. Only 19% of known offenders are women. Nevertheless, women are far more likely to experience domestic violence. Two women are murdered every week by their current or former partner and 44% of violent incidents against women were domestic. According to the stats of female offenders in prison most were in for drug, theft and handling stolen property offences, this accounted for 60% of known female offenders. 15% of sentenced female prisoners had previously been admitted to a psychiatric hospital and over 40% of sentenced women prisoners have been reported as being dependent on drugs in the year before coming to prison. An estimated 20% of women in prison have spent some time in care. Until recently, criminal behavior has been mostly discussed from a male perspective and has been about men, for men and by men. Various theories have shown why some women commit fewer crimes than males. Lombroso believed that women were evolutionarily inferior to men, a lower form of life. He hypothesized that the “natural” female criminal was perceived to have the criminal qualities of the male plus the worst characteristics of women. This appeared to indicate that criminal women were genetically more male than female, therefore biologically abnormal. Freud (1925) offered an explanation of female crime that, women are universally not able to fully resolve the Oedipus complex, have a great deal of need for the approval of men, so as a rule they do not risk upsetting them by committing crimes. The exceptional female who does offend is seen as suffering from extreme penis envy and, in a desire to be a man, takes an aggressive, non-conforming attitude that may result in criminal behavior. In addition, scientists have suggested that the brain differences between male and female is an essential reason why women are more likely to stay out of harm’s way. Current research has demonstrated that females, on average, have a larger deep limbic system than males. Due to this, women are more in touch with their feelings; they have an increased ability to bond and are connected to others. Furthermore, some criminologists argue that women seldom have the opportunity to be involved in organised and corporate crime of which many men are guilty but not convicted. In terms of the ratio of conviction between females and males, where women have similar opportunities for criminal behavior in relation to males, their respective patterns of crimes appear to be broadly similar. However, while, in theory, women have similar opportunities as men to commit crime these may be limited by other factors. Such as employment related crime, as fewer women than men work, less opportunity exists. Women are also more-likely than men to have primary responsibility for child-care, which restricts opportunities for various types of criminal behavior. Female crime is often explained as women’s usual response to lack of opportunity and school failure. It is as a desperate attempt to escape from poverty rather than, as in the case of many men, an aggressive response to their social situation. Courts may deal more-leniently with females, but when women commit crimes that go against male stereotypes of femininity, such as violence, women tend to be more harshly punished than men. As much female crime is petty, non-violent, like shop-lifting and prostitution, women not imprisoned as often as men. Moreover, female forms of crime may be “less visible” to the police. This is especially true in relation to crimes of violence, where women tend to be the victims rather than the perpetrators. A rather different approach to the issue of gender and crime is society’s concept of masculinity that leads to criminal behavior in boys and men. To be masculine means to assert authority and control over others, to be individualistic, aggressive and independent. To sum up, the relationship between gender differences and criminal behavior is complex and varied, there are no simple answers. A number of factors must be taken into account, and the environmental influences and cultural traditions can be seen as the most important ones.
